Registration & Onboarding
Candidates apply directly through our online portal by submitting their full name and email address.
Within one business day, candidates receive an official confirmation email verifying their registration for the upcoming competition date by a committee official.
Preparation Phase
10 days prior to the event, candidates are issued their fictional ‘Political Profile’.
This detailed portfolio outlines their assigned fictional political party, background, relevant experience, and signature platform soundbites.
These profiles are custom made and assigned at random, no two candidates receive the same profile.
Diversity of the profiles minimises overlapping arguments, and we encourage candidates to spend time researching and formatting arguments for defending their allocated platform, and to step out of their comfort zone.

[The submission window closes prior to the distribution of political profiles. Because our profiles and tournament brackets are designed based on the exact number of submissions received, we cannot accept late entries under any circumstances.]
Questions
Along with the distribution of the political profiles, we release a master PDF containing 50 potential debate questions that is published on the PAGPC home page.
The master PDF is the sheet of questions that the adjudicator will select from and ask candidates during the entirety of the competition. These questions range from broad to specific topics of debate.
Out of the 50 published questions, 15 to 20 will be selected at random during each debate, alongside unscripted wildcards. These wildcards do not appear on the published questions, but are custom-tailored to each profile, meaning every candidate must be prepared for unexpected questions given specifically for their platform.
We encourage eager participants to do their research before the competition, as well as revise the questions so they won’t be thrown off during debates.
The Live Debate Format
Rounds feature two candidates and one adjudicator, operating in a tournament bracket format.
Debates begin with 90 seconds of opening pitches. Candidates must answer questions assigned by the adjudicator and engage in a designated dialogue exchange with their opponent.
Candidates are permitted to bring a physical copy of their political profile to the debate. If a candidate is unable to bring a printed copy of their profile, committee members will have two spare copies available.
Both candidates must defend their assigned platforms under cross-examination by the adjudicator. Candidates who fail to stay within their assigned character profile will be penalised. This may negatively affect the audience vote, and persistent issues can result in a surrender of the debate and their bracket placement.
Due to our system of pre-registered contestants, and pre-assigned bracket systems, if a candidate fails to appear for their allocated debate(s), the adjudicator or committee member present will assign the round as forfeit towards the absent candidate, and will advance the present debater to the next round.

Our Hybrid Tournament Bracket System
Initial rounds are contested head-to-head. At the conclusion of each debate, the live audience composed of fellow candidates casts anonymous ballots to determine who progresses to the next round.
The bracket concludes in a final showdown where the last four debaters share the main stage simultaneously. In this expanded forum, the finalists drive the majority of the cross-examination themselves.
Unlike the early elimination rounds, the final competition champion is determined using the Irish Proportional Representation system (Single Transferable Vote), where the audience ranks the four finalists in order of preference to crown the winner.
Additionally, a secondary debate between the candidates eliminated in the first round takes place. The stage comprises up to eight people at once, and also uses the proportional representation system. Rapid-fire questions and snappy responses are emphasised. The winner of this debate by vote receives a special certificate.

At the conclusion of the tournament, four distinct accolades are distributed:
Primaries Awards
Recipients receive an official Framework Certificate, co-signed by the PAGPC Chairman and that season's Special Guest Endorser.
The Resilience Certificate
A dedicated certificate is awarded to the winner of the tournament's secondary bracket, celebrating resilience, recovery and emergence from a rough beginning.

The Pan-American Gubernatorial Primaries Competition was founded in August, 2026, with the mission of tackling political polarization among younger generations. Our initiative was created through worries of growing tension between students in secondary and third level institutions. In an era where divisive rhetoric often replaces constructive debate, the PAGPC hopes to put students in the shoes of those outside their political comfort zones and act as devil's advocates.
The name ‘Pan-American’ reflects the complex and constantly-moving US-style political questions delivered to contestants on stage. We aim to mimic this on a broader level, covering topics from social policy, to financial efforts, whilst drawing from global methods of debating.
The term ‘Gubernatorial’, whilst referring to a ‘state governor’, is used as a nod to the high-stakes nature of major election campaigns. We run with the idea of how gubernatorial races, and other large platforms, operate, and push to replicate the fiercely competitive energy of it. The ‘Primaries’ part of our name aims to have people look past ideological polarization and prioritize cross-spectrum democratic compromise in the run-up to election cycles.
Whilst political disagreement is as old as democracy itself, the bitter divide in modern politics and the sheer complexity of conflicting perspectives have become significantly more apparent since the 1980s, with no signs of slowing down. While the PAGPC does not aim to eradicate disagreement, we hope to reinstate compromise as a primary alternative in the partisan divide.
